Thanks to Roger Johansson, I’ve found a new firefox extension called X-Ray, which I think I’m going to find quite useful.
It shows some of a page’s markup, without you having to ‘view source’. This is a light version of what the developer toolbar extension does, and seems quite useful for a quick overview.
